My project for today is a slimline gift box with some fun Santa scenes! It seems I'm always in search of a gift box in this size for gifts like ties, scarves and socks, so it was a perfect opportunity to make one. This box measures 4" x 10" and it's 2" deep.

First, some photos of the gift box and then, I've included directions below for the basic construction of the box.

The box lid closes with a magnetic flap on the right side.

I couldn't resist creating a few more fun scenes inside!

You can also stand it upright for a decor piece.

Here are the steps for the basic construction of the gift box:

Step 1: Cut a piece of lightweight chipboard 8" x 10". Score on the 8" side at 2" and 6".

Step 2: Cut 2 pieces of lightweight chipboard 4" x 8". Score on the 4" side down the middle of each piece at 2". Score on the 8" side of each piece at 2" and 6".

Step 3: Cut away 2 corners of each piece along the score lines as shown below.

Step 4: Fold the pieces on the score lines. Apply Scor-Tape or a similar strong tape adhesive to the side flaps of each piece as shown below.

Step 5: Remove the tape liners from the long flap of each piece. Adhere the 8" x 10" chipboard piece to the long flap of each piece, lining up the score lines of the 8" x 10" chipboard with the edges of the long flaps.

Step 6: Remove the tape liners from the 4 small flaps. Turn the combined chipboard pieces over. Fold on all score lines and adhere the 4 small flaps to the inside to form the box.

Step 7: Cut a piece of lightweight chipboard 8" x 10 1/4". Score on the 8" side at 2" and 6 1/8".

Step 8: Tape the largest Fancy Bracket Die cutting edge down centered along the edge of the 10 1/4" side closest to the 6 1/8" score line.

Step 9: Die-cut the chipboard piece. Using a pencil and ruler, draw a straight line from the ends of the die-cut portion to the ends of the chipboard. **If you don't have a large platform die-cutting machine, fold the 2" section under and die-cut the piece.

Step 10: Cut along the drawn lines with scissors and round the corners.

Step 11: Turn the chipboard piece over and apply Scor-tape or similar strong tape adhesive to the 2" section.

Step 12: Remove the tape liners and adhere the 2" section to the left side of the box.**The flap is slightly longer than the box to prevent gapping. Overlap the box on each end by 1/8".
Using strong tape adhesive, adhere 2 magnets to the flap as shown.

Step 13: Cut patterned papers to fit the flap and glue them to the flap. Let 2 opposing magnets attach to the magnets underneath. Apply a strong tape adhesive to the magnets.

Step 14: Close the flap and press to adhere the magnets on the right side of the box. Cut patterned papers and glue to the side of the box to cover the magnets. Decorate as desired.

My favorite Christmas memory is making homemade cinnamon rolls with my Dad on Christmas morning. We would wake early, open our stockings and then put present opening on hold while we baked the rolls together. It was one of the few times my Mom would let my Dad bake. He always made a huge mess of the kitchen!! My husband and I carried on the cinnamon roll tradition with our son and even though our son is grown and out on his own now, he still comes over early Christmas morning to make those cinnamon rolls.
